Register for our Proline of GoPro Mounts (Launching Holliday 2015) We're looking for test pilots and evangelists http://www.renomakani.com/vip
Any other questions please send me a personal message on Facebook or email info@renomakani.com

(Step 1)
Make sure you export all your movies at 720 HD using iMovie or Final Cut Pro or whatever program works so that you can then transfer to your iPhone or iPad (Your iPhone won't except 1080p)

(Step 2)
When exporting from iMovie or Final Cut Pro X create a folder (Or Use Dropbox) on your desktop name it Instagram Video and save your 720p edits there.

(Step 3)
Create a album in iPhoto (Or on Dropbox) name it Instagram Video. Transfer your edits from the desktop folder Instagram Video into iPhoto (Apple MAC users use AirDrop and send Videos or Photos directly from your MAC to iPhone 6)

(Step 4)
Open itunes and get ready for iPhone or iPod Sync. Make sure before you sync your iPhone/iPod you check the folder Instagram Video under photos and very important enable Videos within the preferences wile in iTunes.

(Step 5)
After you have successfully transferred videos to your iPhone or iPad use the App SquareadyV. (Squaready for video) This App will allow you to post entire 16:9 videos on Instagram without square cropping your video. If you don't have it download it now. Once you've transcoded your video with SquareadyV you will see your video has been saved to camera roll and is now ready to be uploaded to Instagram.

Note -
Prime times for posting are 8am (Mornings) and 5-6pm Mon-Friday (Afternoons) Don't post more then one video/photo in 24 hours or it won't reach it's full viral potential. Also add most all your hash tags on a comment don't use more then a few within the description of Video (30 Max) When you Tweet it make sure you have a good punch line and be sure to include @Instagram & @GoPro. If Instagram or GoPro likes it they will share or RT if your lucky. The more you blast it out the more likes and views you will generate increasing the value and your work (SEO)

Note - Dropbox is a great in the cloud source. Up to 4G of free storage & services that lets you bring your photos, docs, and videos anywhere and share them easily. Never email yourself a file again! Dropbox Rocks! Download it now here Dropbox and I get the credit :)

Post Production (Video) I use Final Cut Pro X ($299) but you can use iMovie (FREE with MAC)
Post Production (Photography) I use iPhoto (FREE), Photo Shop CC and Adobe Light Room (FREE Trials for PS & Lightroom)

Apps like Dropbox Snapseed, Camera+, Squaready, SquareadyV JusGram, Repost, PS Express, PicPlayPost, Lensflair, iMovie, iMotionHD, ColorSplash, LetterFX, PhotoCube, VersaGram, PhotoWizard, Photogramme, Flipagram, TextMask, Phonto and iWaterMark.

Tip from a PRO: YouTube Best Practices

YouTube Best Practices by Professional surfer and GoPro ambassador Reno Makani Before you continue on please subscribe to my  NEW YouTube Channel

Marketing videos on YouTube is rapidly growing as one of the major online marketing tools, it’s affordable and has great impact on consumer behavior along as a place to publicly displace your creative side. As YouTube video views are continuing to grow rapidly every day, using YouTube as a major method of organic traffic generation for your site, blog or social media channel resulting in guaranteed success!

Video Optimization

Achieve high ranks for videos on search engine results page for targeted keywordsIncrease the number of views to the video on YouTube, social websites and blog(s) Support / start a viral buzz for a new product on social media websitesBuild high relevancy links from video page to product page and vice versa to increase its authority.

Video Optimization Challenges

The main challenge is that search engines can’t parse videos (most search engines are originally designed to index HTML content). Search engine can read and base their ranking algorithm on following factors: video title, description, comments, ratings, number of shares and some Meta information.

YouTube Video Optimization Best Practices

YouTube Channel: upload video Video Title: is considered one of the most important factors for video ranking on search engines and YouTube search results page.- Start video title with the main keyword or product main feature- Include targeted geographical location and brand name in the title (if applicable)- Title length shouldn’t exceed 45 characters (with spaces), Avg. 5-7 words- Uses a catchy title, videos get watched because of how they are titled – “how they sell themselves.”Video description: - Write the description in a compelling manner that drives the user to take action.  This description is what the user will see before view your video on search engine result pages.- Use several related terms “long tail keywords” in the description that are highly relevant to the top targeted keyword and don’t keyword stuff the video description- It’s recommended to use the video transcript and revise it to make it reader-friendly- Include a clickable (full path) URL in the first line of the description. Best pages to link to are: product and catalog pagesVideo duration: video duration shouldn’t exceed 3-4 minutesVideo Category: choose the most appropriate 1 to 3 categoriesVideo Tags: Use 5-10 tags for each video. Tags could be product name, product benefits, city, province name and brand nameVideo Rating: Allow users to rate the video; search engines will pay attention to high rated videos. It’s also a key part of “going viral”, as potential viewers are very attracted to highly rated videos.Video File Name: it’s recommended to rename the video file before uploading it to YouTube, use the top targeted keyword as the file name.Video Length: I recommended 2-3 minutes for action packed videos and 30 seconds for commercial.

Other Factors Affect Videos Ranking and Visibility

Outside of YouTube- Embed YouTube video on social media bio, your product and home pageCreate a Blog post about the new video and embed it within the same postPost the YouTube URL into Facebook and other social channels a few times a week for easy SEOGet other friends, peers, athletes and brands to help extend your reach.

Advanced YouTube Video Optimization Opportunities

YouTube Call To Action Overlay: A popup footer banner that appears 10sec into the video and 10sec from the end of the video. It could be used to share more information about the content of your video or to raise interest to your channel, other videos or link to an external website. There’s no additional charge to setup this feature but it involves- Connecting YouTube account to AdWords- Creating a promoted videos YouTube accountVideo Annotations: a way to add a banner, text link or interactive commentary to videos. You could link any annotations to YouTube videos, channels, or search results from within a video.Example here > "GoPro Surfing China"

Why Is Video Optimization Important?

Ten years ago, people began switching from newsprint and television to the Internet as their main source of news. Now video is the primary source of news for the public. Anyone can go online at any time to watch the highlights of the big game. At the same time, a person can learn how to knit a new scarf with video. Why is video important to the Internet marketing community? YouTube is one of the most powerful marketing tools at the disposal of businesses. Since its acquisition by Google, YouTube has become the second most powerful search engine in the world. Best of all, Google indexes YouTube videos instantly. A fully optimized YouTube Channel containing engaging video content will not only provide a powerful, followable link to your website, but it will also greatly increase views, which will drive more traffic to your website.

Note - I  captured some of the first GoPro high def content and later uploaded my first GoPro video in 2008. "Old YouTube Channel" At that moment I had no idea that GoPro and YouTube would be the giants that they have become. Link to video here>  GoPro Wave With Rainbow

Optimizing Your YouTube Channel:

Channel SettingsTitle – Include your name in the titleVisibility – Check the blip to make your channel visibleE-Mail Location – Check the box so others can find your channel via e-mailChannel Tags – This is the most important part of channel optimizationChoose 3-5 keywords you want to target for your channel. Make sure these keywords are the same ones you use on your website and that they are relevant to your businessSeparate each keyword using quotation marks. It should look like this:gopro, hero3, surfing, hawaii, travel, adventureChannel Themes and ColorsThis has no real bearing on the optimizationChoose a theme and colors that are similar to your websiteEx: http://www.youtube.com/renomakaniThis YouTube channel was modeled after our old website at http://www.renomakani.comModules – Any other modules are fine, but these three are necessary for optimizationCommentingSubscriptionsFriendsVideos and PlaylistsAlways select the “My Uploaded Videos” option in the featured content boxAlways set one of your videos as the featured videoCheck the box to play your featured video automaticallyProfileUse your business or brand for the nameUse the exact URL to your website under the website section — this will be the only followable link you can obtain through YouTubeIn your channel description, summarize the content of the channel, and include a link to your company’s Facebook or other social media channelsIn the About Me section, it is important to give a brief description of your brand or company using the targeted keywordsAll other sections of the profile are great to have, but they will not help optimize the channel in any way

Optimizing Your YouTube Videos:

ContentCreate high-quality, engaging video content.
Choose video content related to the targeted keywordsMention the targeted keywords in the scriptInfo and Settings.
Video Title.
Always include the word “video” at the end of the title.
Include your company name in the title.
Description. Include the company website URL within the first two lines of the description"SEO"This will be a CTA link.
When users click on the video, the company URL will still show up in the video description without the expanded view.
Mention the company name after the company URL.
Include 3-5 keywords in the video description.
Include links to the company Facebook and Twitter pages at the end of the video description lower down within the description
Tags – Very important for search engine optimization of videos.
Choose 3-5 keywords you want to target.
Separate each keyword using camas. It should look like this:gopro, hero3, surfing, hawaii, big waves, action sportsThumbnail.
Choose a  tailored visually appealing thumbnail. This will make the video more inviting to viewers.
Broadcasting and Sharing.
OptionsPrivacy – Set to publicLicense – Select the standard YouTube licenseComments – AllowComment Voting – AllowVideo Responses – AllowRatings – AllowEmbedding – AllowSyndication – AllowCaptions and Subtitles –
"Advance SEO" YouTube videos are converted into Java, which makes the content unable to be crawled by search engines. By uploading a caption file, you are giving Google a giant copy block to read.
Transcribe the video to a .txt file.
Use periods and commas to signify breaks in speech.
This will help Google’s voice recognition service to time the captions properly.
If the video contains no speech, use the annotations feature to create a caption with a call to action for the company website or social networking page. Make sure the timing is set on the annotation to give ample display time for the captionUpload the transcript or caption file (processing can take several minutes)
Date and Map Set the location to the company address.

Promoting Your YouTube Videos:

Embed the videos in your personal or company blogInclude a link to the YouTube URLEmbed the videos on the personal or company websiteInclude a link to the YouTube URLSyndicate the videos via social networking websitesDistribute the videos using http://www.tubemogul.comFind linking partners for the videos. Magazines, news broadcasting, blogers, writers, etc.

Magazines, news broadcasting, blogers, writers, etc.

If you follow most all of my best practices, you will notice the page hits are now starting to increase because of YouTube channel and video optimization efforts.

What can be done next to bring in more traffic?

Distributing and syndicating videos through social media peripherals will give the channel the jolt needed to turn it viral. Keep it simple – post each video on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc… Social media syndication reaches the largest audience possible in the least amount of time. Embedding the videos on the company website and company blog will greatly impact the number of views. Be sure to include a link to the YouTube URL on the blog and website. Finding linking partners for videos will assist in driving in more traffic. The easiest way to do this is through http://www.tubemogul.com. Tube Mogul is a pay-service video distribution company. For a fee, they will distribute videos across numerous video-hosting websites. A much cheaper method of doing this is by searching through websites and blogs, and getting them to link to the video page on the company website. This process is very time consuming, but numerous back-links can be obtained through this process.  If you have a budget then I say go for it :)

Tip from a PRO: GoPro HERO3 HERO4 Best Practices

GoPro HERO3+ HERO4 Best Practices

By GoPro Ambassador Professional Surfer Reno Makani

Take a moment and be one of the first to sign up for exclusive insights, media, VIP events and giveaways at http://www.renomakani.com/vip

Filming Action Sports like Surfing, Snowboarding, Skateboarding, Moto, Drifting, MTB or
any high speed action I use 960p @ 120 fps or or 1080p @ 120 fps. For ultra wide clean crisp shots use 1440p @ 48-80 fps and HERO4 Silver & HERO3+ Black users try 1080p 60 fps or 960p @ 100 fps. For professional settings turn ON Protune - I like to use these configured settings for during the day - Spot Meter Off - Unless I'm in a tight dark area pointing the camera into a brighter setting. Protune On, White Balance AUTO, Color GoPro, ISO Limit 400, Sharpness LOW and EV Comp N/A. Protune On makes Neutral Color for more flexibility during post production. Able to now Record video in cinema quality 24 fps.

(Note) HERO3 Silver users I recommend 720p @ 60 fps for high speed action.
To sum it up it depends on what your doing in post production. If seamless slow motion is what you want, I recommend filming in higher fps resulting in smoother slow motion.
(Note) HERO4 Black users if you really want to get the best quality try 4K @ 30 fps it will blow your mind :) but remember you need a fast processor and 4K TV/Monitor.

On location in Mexico > Time-Lapse 0.5 Photo GoPro

(Note) Learn to use GoPro Studio 2.5.3 to convert/transcode clips (720p, 960p & 1440p) to 1080p. If your just wanting to film B-roll use 1080p @ 60fps or 1080p @ 30 fps. HERO3+ Black users try 1080p 48 fps SuperView On if your feeling a little lazy haha)

I recommend using New GoPro Studio 2.5.3 software to convert/transcode 720p, 960p & 1440p to 1080p HD video. You can also use GoPro Studio 2.5.3 for amazing photography time-lapse's.

Better yet GoPro Studio is FREE. Download your copy > http://bit.ly/GoPro_Studio_2

(Note) Functions include • Frame-rate adjust for slow motion • Exposure • Contrast • Saturation • Color Temperature • Image flip rotation  • Slow Motion • Video Templates • Frame Re-size (Up-res/Down-res)

(Note) Your gonna have to play with the Framing Controls like Zoom, Horizontal Position, Vert Pos, Rotation, H.Zoom, H.Dynamic, Cropping and zoom etc in order to get the ratio perfect.

Time-Lapse of a sunrise or sunset I will usually capture one photo every 2 seconds (30 photos per 1 minute)

(Note) When shooting faster moving abjects you will want to speed up the Time-Lapse to 1 photo every sec (60 photos in 1 minute)

Time-Lapse 1 photo every 2 seconds > Photo GoPro

Action Shots with Time-Lapse. If I don't have access to my hands or remote I use Time-Lapse 1 photo every 0.5 seconds. (120 photos in 1 minute)

(Note) From time to time I use Burst Mode (HERO4) at 30 fps 12 MP photos at 1-3 second intervals for ultimate detail and a streamline sequence.

Burst Mode 30 photos in 2 seconds (Remote on my wrist) > Photo GoPro

Night Photo - Long Exposure
Shutter - 2 Seconds
Spot Meter - Off
Protune - On
White Balance - 3000K
Color - GoPro Color
ISO Limit - 100 or 200

Sharpness - Low, Medium or High depending how bright the shot is.
Exposure time on Night Photo is set to auto by default. In auto you can expose from 1/4096th of a second up to 2 seconds. This means you can use this mode to shoot regular photos as well! More customized photos, manually set the exposure to 2 sec, 5, 10, 20 or even 30 sec. Use with the App remote or WiFi remote. This mode can be great for long exposure video creation, stop-motion and mental low light shots from just about all scenes imagined.

Post Production - (Video)

I use Final Cut Pro X ($299) but you can use iMovie  (FREE with MAC)
and new  GoPro Studio 2.5.3 use iOS Apps like iMovie, Splice, iMotionHD and SquaredyV.

(Note) Watch my last FCP production (GoPro Surfing China) with Teammate Jamie Sterling (Video Below) This video was my second GoPro video of the day to be featured.

Here's another photo that was shared on GoPro social media of Jamie Starling and I.

Post Production MAC - (Photography)

I recommend Photo Shop CC and Adobe Light Room (FREE Trials Available for PS & LR) iPhoto (FREE) works decent and is great for beginners.

(Note) iOS iPhone Apps I like to use are GoProApp, Light Room Mobile (Great way to sync photos from your MAC to your iPhone) DropBox Snapseed, Camera+, Squaready Pro, Squaready V, JusGram, Repost, PS Express, PicPlayPost, Lensflair, iMovie, iMotionHD, ColorSplash, LetterFX, PhotoCube, VersaGram, PhotoWizard, TextMask, Phonto and iWaterMark to name a few.

Other Info -

Battery life
One of the weakest areas of the GoPro HERO3. It’s due to the intense processing power required to run all those high resolutions and frame rates. The GoPro HERO3 is very small so there’s no more room for larger battery power. Decreasing the power supply we now have WiFi built in. Here is a diagram that will help you understand how long you will be able to capture media with your GoPro HERO3. Have not tested battery life for the new HERO4

Stand-By Mode
Kicks in after the camera has been idle in any state (except recording) after 5 minutes.  Once it’s in stand-by mode you won’t see anything different on the screen. If you press a button to record you’ll notice there’s a 1 second delay between pressing the button and the camera responding. (Note) if you’re in photo mode and you’re waiting more than 5 minutes to capture a moment!).  If you’ve ever wondered why there’s been a delay – that’s why!  Stand-by mode is amazing for when the camera is accidentally turns on. GoPro did some recording tests and the camera ran on stand-by mode (waiting to film) for 6 hours before draining the battery supply. I always recommend setting your GoPro to turn off in 120 seconds. Have not tested Stand-ByMode battery life for the new HERO4.

Professional Techniques -

Learn to use the Wifi Remote. This will result in saving time and capturing shots remotely.

Learn to use the GoPro App. I use this religiously to change settings and calibrate my view of whats in frame. I also transfer media back to my iPad or iPhone.

(Note) Last thing you want to do is go out and capture amazing content then later find out that you or your object was not within frame.

(Note) Be sure you turn off WiFi function when your done unless your using remote or App as it will drain your battery quite fast.

Night Photo - Long Exposure
Shutter - 2 Seconds
Spot Meter - Off
Protune - On
White Balance - 3000K
Color - GoPro Color
ISO Limit - 100 or 200
Sharpness - Low, Medium or High depending how bright the shot is.

Thanks for tuning into my network. I'm happy to add value and share my GoPro knowledge as 2014 will mark 9 years since I first experimented Nicholas Woodmans original GoPro Hero 35mm wrist camera and going on 7 years since religiously working with GoPro on a professional level adding value and putting cameras in places that have yet to be seen.

Take a moment next time your on your PC or MAC and link up with my Facebook Page. If you want to help support my work even farther on the right side you will see a box that says "Invite Your Friends to Like this Page" Feel free to down the list and invite your peers and the people by checking the box that have similar passions and interest such as GoPro, photography and cinematography. This will help me reach people who share similar passions and like minded interests.

I would also like to thank Nicholas, Justin, Pilar, Andie and the entire GoProOG crew for all their continued support. Looking forward to the future.
